Crushed Benefit Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Crushed

A Reece’s Rainbow Benefit Performance

December 21, 2012

WASHINGTON— “Why is it the guys you like, never seem to like you back?” If you have ever asked yourself this question—and let’s be honest, you became a lobbyist on Capitol Hill to prove your third grade crush wrong—come laugh at someone elses heartbreaks, awkward moments and relationship disasters all for a wonderful cause!

Straight from the award winning run in Los Angeles, Kiersten Lyons, (Grey’s Anatomy, MadMen, and currently on ABC’s The Neighbors) arms herself with the ubiquitous overhead projector from math class and a handful of construction paper hearts, she traces her timeline of crushes. Starting with a Han Solo action figure, Kiersten leads the audience on a journey of equally painful and hysterical heartbreaks.

All proceeds of the night go to benefit Reece’s Rainbows, a non profit based in Gaithersburg, MD, dedicated to rescuing orphans with Down Syndrome, HIV and other special needs through the gift of adoption. To date Reece’s Rainbows helped over 900 children find their forever families!

Kiersten Lyons has been performing professionally in television, film and stage for the past 11 years. Previous to her professional work she was doing her best to log enough theater hours to be awarded into the honor theater society, Thespians, and be able to sport the illustrious Thespian jacket complete with embroidered drama masks. Currently recurring on ABC’s The Neighbors as Billie Jean King, other credits include: Mad Men, The Closer, Bones, Jimmy Kimmel and her recent stint on Grey’s Anatomy where her pet lion attacked her. She welcomes all jokes referencing her booking the job to her last name and having nothing to do with her talent.

crushes are coming!!!!!

It is one thing to tell funny or embarrassing stories about your past at a dinner party; the person you’re probably referring to isn’t there. Maybe even people that knew you back when aren’t there. The story can be as “real” as need be- to protect the innocent, namely yourself, or even to get a larger laugh…

But December 20th isn’t a dinner party. It’s a show a town away from where I grew up with friends and family from as long back as kindergarten attending. Some of the actual crushes are coming. Now this isn’t the first time I’ve had crushes attend Crushed. Two have already seen the show in LA. But these two crushes are now my dearest friends, they knew “their crush story” long before the lights came up on stage.

I’m ver excited to perform Crushed miles away from where many of the actual stories took place, but I can’t even pretend that some of that excitement comes from nerves…

Starstruck…
I don’t get nervous around celebrities- they are just people who get their picture taken more than the rest of us. But this was no celebrity, this was Stephanie Tanner.  My sister and I went to her book signing, heard her speak, then waited patiently in line to have her sign it… but when we got to the front I lost my ability to speak. I just stared wide eyed and finally shook my head yes when she eyed my camera and asked, “if we wanted a picture.” Then it was over. My sister and I both couldn’t speak. It was a childhood dream realized. Except I wasn’t 9 years old, we were racing golf carts around the Warner Bros lot, and I wasn’t playing their cousin on a very special Thanksgiving episode. But my life is way better than I could’ve dreamed all those year ago in my pink room… So Jodie Sweetin, you get the honor of being the only person I’ve ever been starstruck around…
Well I haven’t met JTT yet…

Whilst shooting at the Disney Studios I saw my boyfriend… and yes that’s a Hawaiian dress I’m wearing, and no I didn’t choose it for myself…

55+++

There are many ways to say “I love you.”  Just ask any 4th grader who’s mouthing “Olive Juice” across their classroom to their crush.  In my family the best way to say it is by squeezing someone’s hand to the beat, “I love you fifty five plus.”  Fifty five is a really high number when you’re a kid- that’s a whole lotta love, then to tack on a plus? Well that’s just infinity!… I think this started with my mom’s dad doing it with his kids, then my mom and dad doing it with us.

During mass, after the Our Father, our whole family would hold hands just a bit longer and all squeeze together, “I love you fifty five plus.”  Most Sundays that would include my older brother squeezing my hand too hard, me silently yelping, my older brother getting in trouble, my younger brother trying to bite one of my twin baby sisters and then somebody getting kicked in the shin. The sibling violent love was a staple with five children.  But just sometimes on Saturday morning when you’d wake up first and win the prize of getting to go the grocery store all by yourself with dad he’d squeeze your hand as you’d walk down the soup aisle. And it’d just be about you and dad.  Or on that tuesday you’d be home sick from school and you’d be watching Golden Girls not yet understanding the jokes while mom spray n washed clothing on the living room floor and she’d look up at you, smile and kiss the top of your head whispering, “I love you fifty plus.”

And now, I’m an adult, 3,000 miles away from the safety of my parent’s house (well mostly safe- there were a lot of bruises with that whole sibling rivalry love) and my little sister forwards me a “perfect mom” text about paper towels you see my mom’s text signature… and I’m right back at church in a hand holding line of 7 people all about to squeeze each other in love.  And its perfection.

“I love you 55+”
